How does a vein finder work?

January 08 , 2021

The use of a vein finder would help the nurse and phlebotomist to easily locate the vein, preventing venipuncture failure, pre-analytical error in the specimen collection and even more discomfort and pain to the patient.

Locating the vein is not easy, there are some factors that affect patients’ veins visibility such as variation on the skin of the young children (especially infants), obesity and dehydrated patients. In this case, we need a tool to help the nurse or doctor to find the vein and complete the treatment without any difficulty. Moreover, failure in venipuncture may cause thrombosis of the vein, hematoma, or even nerve injury involving the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve, which can lead to the so-called “causalgia” or complex regional pain syndrome.

Normally, there are two technology applied to machine which used to find the vein. One is laser technology, another is infrared technology. Both of them has pros and cons. The most famous application brand of laser technology is AccuVein, laser can penetrate the surface of the skin and show the dynamics of deep blood vessels, but maybe harm the eyes` of patients or nurses. Most of brands adopt infrared technology because of safe and stable.

Vein finder is a medical device based on the principle of the different light absorption rate between blood and surrounding tissue. In that case, this device can show veins in real time and  the medical staff as nurses and doctors can locate the vein and do all kinds of procedure more efficiently and more easily.
